The No. 1 seeds had a rough day as the Class A state baseball tournament moved into the double-elimination rounds Saturday at Red Haddox Field in Bloomington.
The Rosetown A’s won a 9-7 game over St. Louis Park to start the day, while the St. Paul Shamrocks blanked the St. Paul Mudhens 5-0 in the second game. Stockmen’s Irish topped the St. Paul Capitals 2-1 in the third game of the day. Defending champion Minnetonka won 4-1 over the Minneapolis Angels in 10 innings as all four No. 1 seeds lost.
Rosetown A’s 9, St. Louis Park Pirates 7
Down early, the Pirates claimed a lead after four innings, only to see the A’s keep adding runs to keep Rosetown’s run alive in a 9-7 game.
The Pirates scored four in the third and two in the fourth to come back from an early 3-1 deficit and go ahead 7-3. Rosetown came back and scored a pair in the eighth to go up 8-7 before taking on another in the ninth to advance.
St. Paul Shamrocks 5, St. Paul Mudhens 0
The offense was quiet for the Mudhens against Shamrocks pitcher Sam Miller, who threw a complete-game shutout in a 5-0 win for the away team.
The Shamrocks broke open a close game with four runs in the top of the fifth. The first three Shamrocks reached, and an RBI singles from Chad Clute and Tim Shows, combined with a pair of Mudhens errors led to a four-run frame.
The Mudhens only had multiple runners on base in two innings in the game.
The Shamrocks scored the first run of the game in the third, when Sam Cobbs scored on a bases-loaded walk by Charlie Callahan.
Stockmen’s Irish 2, St. Paul Capitals 1
The game was scoreless after five innings, but the Irish put up two in the top of the sixth before giving up one in the bottom of that frame. That held up as the only runs of the game, as the Irish won 2-1 to advance, becoming the third team of the day to upset a No. 1 seed.
Minnetonka Millers 4, Minneapolis Angels 1 (10)
It took extra innings, but the Millers took down the final No. 1 seed of the day with a 4-1, 10-inning win over the Minneapolis Angels.
The game was tied 1-1 after nine, but the Millers scored three in the top of the 10th, then closed out the bottom of the frame.
The A's play the Shamrocks at 4 p.m. Sunday, while the Irish face the Millers in the game following. In the losers' bracket, the Pirates play the Mudhens at 10 a.m., while the Capitals and Angels face each other at 1 p.m., both games being elimination games.
